'Show Me' 'Tell Me' Questions

Show Me Questions

You will be asked one of these questions whilst driving.

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash the rear window?
Twist the end of the wiper stalk down for a few seconds.

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash the front windscreen?
Pull the wiper stalk towards you for a few seconds.

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how to switch on the dipped headlights?
Twist the end of the light stalk to the second setting (first setting is Auto).

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would set the rear demister?
Press the rear demiser button.

When it is safe to do so, can you show me you would demist the front windscreen?
Press the front window demist button. Mention turning the temperature up could help.

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how to operate the horn?
Press the centre of the steering wheel firmly for a second.

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would open and close the side window?
Press the auto window buton down, then lift the same button.


Tell me questions

You'll be asked one of these qustions at the start of the test.

Explain how you would check the direction indicators are working.
 
Point at hazard warning (triangle) button, explain you would press it and then walk around the car.

  Explain how you would check the brake lights are working on this car
Explain you would press the brake pedal then use a reflective surface like a garage door or a window, or get someone to check the lights with you.

Tell me how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Explain the steering should not be heavy. When the car is turned on the steering wheel should be easy to move.

LIGHTS

Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
Fog lights should be used when visability falls below 100m. You will need the ignition and the dipped beam on, then twist the centre band up twice to turn on the fog lights. Two warning lights will show.

Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main (full) beam and explain how you would know main beam is on.
You will need the ignition and dipped beam on, then push the stalk away from you. A blue warning light will show.

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
 
Explain brakes should be tested as you set off. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. The car should not pull to the left or right.

Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

Explain the head restraint should be adjusted so the center of the head restraint is level with your eye line or at the top of your ears.

Tell me how would you know there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
The 'ABS' light would stay on if there was a problem.

Tell me where would you find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Tyre pressure information can be found in the vehicle handbook and on a sticker inside the glovebox. To check the pressures, use a reliable pressure gauge.


Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that the have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
Tyres should have no cuts or bulges.

The minimum legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm. All central deep channels around the tyre should be more than 1.6mm.

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level.
Open bonnet. Point out the engine oil dipstick. Explain when the engine is cold and on a level surface, I would remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, replace it, take it back out again and make sure the oil level is between the Min and Max markers.

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the coolant level.
 
Open bonnet. Point out coolant reservoir. Explain the coolant level should be between the Min and Max markers.

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the brake fluid level.
Open bonnet. Point out brake fluid reservoir. Explain the brake fluid level should be between the Min and Max markers.
