'Show Me' 'Tell Me' Questions

Toyota Yaris Hybrid

These questions will normally be asked at the start of the driving test.
When you get to the car you will need to unlock the car by pressing the unlock button on the key.
Don't start the car until asked to by the examiner.
When they ask you to get in and get comfortable, get in and put your seat belt on.
The answers below assume you haven't already pressed the power button.


Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working.
1. Press hazard warning (triangle) button
2. Walk around car checking all six bulbs are flashing.

Show me (or explain) how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
1. Explain, "use a reflective surface like a garage door or a window, or get someone to check the lights with you".

Show me (or explain) how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
1. Explain "the steering shouldn't be heavy.
2. Put your foot on the brake and press the power button.
3. Move steering wheel left or right a little to show that it's NOT heavy.

Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
1. Keep foot on foot brake.
2. Release handbrake.
3. Apply handbrake, explain, "as the handbrake comes up, it gets tighter, it locks in place and it can come up further if necessary".

Show me how to check the horn is working.
1. Press horn, firmly.

Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

1. Press the power button twice to turn ignition on.
2. Pull the wiper stalk toward you for a couple of seconds.

LIGHTS

Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
1. Twist the light stalk to dipped beam.
2. Twist the centre fog light section twice up.
3. Show the orange light on the dash.
4. Explain, "you would use the fog lights when visibility falls below 100 meters".

Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know main beam is on.
1. Twist the light stalk to dipped beam.
2. Push stalk away from you.
3. Point to the blue light on the dash.

Tell me how you would check the headlights and taillights are working.
1. Turn on dipped beam.
2. Explain, "I would now walk around car to make sure the front and rear lights are working".

Show me (explain) how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively.

1. Point out the controls above. Hotter air clears the windows quicker.
2. If you do turn them on, press auto to put things back to normal.

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
1. Explain, "Brakes should be tested as you set off".
2. Explain, "Brakes should not feel spongy or slack".
2. Explain, "The car should not pull to the left or right".

Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

1. Explain,"The head restraint should be adjusted so the center of the head restraint is level with your eye line or at the top of your ears".

Tell me how would you know there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
1. Explain, "The 'ABS' light would stay on if there was a problem".

Tell me where would you find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
1. Explain, "Pressure information can be found in the vehicle handbook".
2. Explain, "To check the pressures, use a reliable pressure gauge".

3. Explain, "Tyres should be cold when checked and don't forget the spare".

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that the have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
1. Explain, "Tyres should have no cuts or bulges".

2. Explain, "The minimum legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm. All central deep channels around the tyre should be more than 1.6mm".

1. Open bonnet.
2. Point out the engine oil dipstick.
3. Explain, "When the engine is cold and on a level surface, I would remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, replace it, take it back out again and make sure the oil level is between the Min and Max markers".

1. Open bonnet.
2. Point out coolant reservoir.
3. Explain, "The coolant level should be between the Min and Max markers".

3. Explain, "The brake fluid level should be between the Min and Max markers".

Identify where you would check the windscreen washer reservoir.
1. Open bonnet.
2. Point out windscreen washer reservoir.
3. Explain, "You would open cap and look inside to make sure there's liquid inside".
